Which is superior? Steel or aluminum? Signage with a Rusted Finish Never Fails to Impress
The roughness of aluminum What advantages does aluminum have over steel? all of the above!
This novel signs metal product, which we have been producing for almost five years, continues to change the way a naturally rusting cor-ten steel finish looks and feels. Find out the many advantages of utilizing aluminum over steel for signs.
Roughness of aluminum
How can this operate when aluminum isn’t supposed to rust? With our method, it works!
An aluminum panel is treated with a primer, an iron flakes solution, and an acidic solution before the chemical reaction known as “rusting” can start. Depending on the desired level of rust, the sign may be left out for a few hours or even overnight. Longer equals rustier. To “halt” the finish’s further degradation, the finish is then washed off and clear coated.
Similar to naturally occurring rust, there is no particular pattern to the rust finish; it is all natural because the rusting process is the same.
just slightly accelerated before stopping.
What Advantages Do Aluminum Replacements Offer Over Steel?
Typically, steel has 2.5 times the density of aluminum. Aluminum is therefore less expensive to install and create innovative patterns out of since it is lighter in weight and simpler to work with.
Due to its greater malleability, aluminum reacts better to bending and cutting. This material makes it possible to create architectural sign designs with bends and curves as well as inside illumination. Using aluminum instead of steel makes creating CNC-cut logos and letters considerably easier, whether they are backed up, flushed through, or pushed through. Since aluminum is an easier metal to produce, CNC-routing letters on a flatbed is a standard and more cost-effective procedure when applied to an aluminum product.
With the use of aluminum, this simulated rust finish doesn’t deteriorate over time. The “rusting” process is essentially stopped in its tracks by the transparent coating on the finish. This is advantageous to prevent rusty drips from appearing on your letters or foundation. The clear coat prevents rusting and makes this sign finish easier to clean and more vandal-resistant than conventional painted finishes.
Do We Use Steel?
Please note that we are not in any way “anti-steel.”
We just lean heavily toward aluminum in regard to all aspects of sign fabrication. Steel supports and some steel structures are virtually always used in the installation of our signage, as well. Steel thus acknowledges the affection.
Custom Rusted Metal Signs
Don’t fight the urge to give your sign a classic, rustic look!
The beautifully aged appearance that brings to mind happy memories of summer days would typically take a sign a very long time to develop, but we can change that by giving your sign our very special patina treatment!
Consider this sign for Ridgeline International as an example; it was constructed of corten steel, laser cut into a 48″ by 48″ two-layered square, and also had LED lighting.
We also finished a much smaller project for Button & Awl Americana Emporium that was a single-layer sign with negative cuts.
In addition, we made a sign for Great Frogs Winery and applied a patina to it to make it look rusted. This one has two layers that are 2″ apart and 24″ wide by 18″ tall.
How much is your company’s reputation worth to you?
Signs are a costly asset that represents your company’s brand and is quite visible. There is an alternative to updating your signage when they start to appear faded and worn. Not only can refinish your signs make them seem like new again, but it will also save you hundreds of dollars.
Your business’s image is conveyed via your signage. What does having rusted or fading signage say about you and your company?
Any hue of rusted or sun-fading signage may be cleaned and restored.
The surfaces of signs deteriorate with time due to exposure to sunlight. If placed close to the water, metal surrounds may develop unsightly holes due to salt corrosion. The ubiquitous rusted metal signs used in retail architecture are infamous for oozing rust and discoloring fresh concrete. If any of these issues arise, the building as a whole loses curb appeal.
Paint-on signs, metal signs that have rusted, vintage signs, and even signs that are just oxidized and faded may all be healed, restored, and protected using Everbrite Coatings. Dull and faded signs will have their original color and luster restored, and EverbriteTM clear coating will shield them from oxidation, corrosion, and other harmful factors.
- No matter the color, Everbrite™ will renew the color and finish of the sign and will restore it to look new again.
- Everbrite™ can also be used to refurbish and protect storefront metals and bollards.
- You can test the process by cleaning an area and observing it while it is clean and STILL WET. If the sign looks good when it is clean and wet, it can be restored with Everbrite.
