Your bone is considered the supporting framework for your body. The outer layer of bones, which is the hard part, is made of compact (cortical) bone that is covered by the lighter spongy (trabecular) bone inside. While the outside of the bone is covered with fibrous tissue called periosteum. The bones in your body start out as softer and in a more flexible form of tissue called cartilage. Your cells in the body lay the calcium down onto the cartilage to form bone. After the bone is formed, cartilage may remain at the ends to act as a cushion between bones. This cartilage along with other ligaments and tissues connect bones to form what we call a joint.
Unfortunately, bone cancer can grow through your body. When a cancer grows in your bone, they can harm normal bone tissue. Bone cancer can occur to any bone, but in most typical cases, they can affect and form in the thigh bone, shin bone, or upper arm. This cancer is called primary bone cancer or bone sarcomas.
Types of bone cancer
There are three main types of bone cancer. Usually, the type of bone cancer determines through the type of cell and tissue where the cancer starts. The following shows the three main types of bone cancer:
- Osteosarcoma – The most common primary bone cancer that generally affects children and adolescents. It usually originates at the tips of the long bones in the arms and legs or in the hips and shoulders. This type of bone cancer affects the hard tissue that provides the outer layer of your bones.
- Ewing Sarcoma – This type of bone cancer begins in the growth of cells of the soft tissue around the bones. The part of the body where it can usually begin is at the leg and in the pelvis, but it can happen in any bone. It also starts in the soft tissues of the chest, abdomen, arms or other locations.
- Chondrosarcoma – This type of bone cancer frequently occurs in adults wherein the tumor begins in the soft connective tissue that allows the movement between joints and bones (cartilage). It most commonly begins in the bones of the pelvis, thigh areas, and shoulders.
Symptoms of Bone Cancer:
- Pain and swelling in the specific and affected bone
- Fatigue
- Extreme pain in your bones that wake you up at night
- Decreased range of motion
- A lump in the affected area that can be hard or soft to touch
What causes bone cancer?
Several healthcare professionals aren’t certain what causes bone cancers. But there are certain factors that may contribute to increasing its chances of forming abnormal growths in the bone. This includes:
- Radiation therapy
- Atypical cellular growth
- Chromosomal mutations
Risk Factors
- The use of radiation therapy and other chemotherapy drugs that use a cancer treatment may increase the risk of developing bone cancer in the near future.
- There are some rare inherited genetic disorders like Li-Fraumeni syndrome that may increase the risk of having bone cancer. Another reason is inheriting a genetic mutation that can cause retinoblastoma also increases your risk.
- In other extreme cases, having a benign bone condition can unfortunately progress to cancer.
