SEMISLOT88 – Kamala Harris signaled a major change in United States (US) policy regarding the Gaza war, when speaking Thursday evening local time. In front of Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu who met him on the sidelines of a visit to Washington, he shouted for a peace agreement and said he would not be silent about the suffering in the Palestinian enclave.
This tears up President Joe Biden’s ‘playbook’ which seemed to give full support to Israel during his time in office. He said it was time to end the “devastating” war.
“What has happened in Gaza over the last nine months has been truly devastating,” he stressed, quoted by AFP, Friday (26/7/2024).
“Images of dead children and desperate and hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes fleeing for a second, third or fourth time,” he told reporters.
“We cannot turn away from this tragedy. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering and I will not remain silent.”
The strong candidate for US presidential candidate from the Democratic Party also emphasized that in his meeting with Netanyahu he urged the 74 year old man to see Gaza as a dire situation. He said he was seriously concerned about the scale of human and Gaza suffering, including the deaths of too many innocent civilians.
“And I expressed clearly my serious concerns about the dire humanitarian situation there,” he added, speaking very frankly in front of Netanyahu.
Palestinian State & Immediate Ceasefire
On the same occasion, he also called for the establishment of a Palestinian state. This includes asking Israel and Hamas to agree to a ceasefire and a hostage release agreement to end the war in October 2023.
“As I just said to Prime Minister Netanyahu, now is the time to get this deal done,” he said.
Harris’ blunt comments were in stark contrast to the friendly greetings between Biden and Netanyahu earlier. Although it masks months of tension between the two men as well as questions about the relevance of the US president.
Harris has been more outspoken about Gaza in the past than Biden. There is speculation that he could take a tougher approach towards Israel.
“So, to everyone who has called for a ceasefire. And to everyone who longs for peace. I see you and I hear you,” added Kamala Harris, quoted from SEMISLOT88.
“Let’s bring the hostages home. And let’s provide much-needed assistance to the Palestinian people,” he stressed.
“Let us all do what we can to prevent the suffering of innocent civilians. And let us condemn anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and hatred in any form. And let us work to unite our country,” he concluded.
According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, 39,175 residents died due to Israeli attacks. As many as 90,000 people were reported injured.
