Raat Ke Afsane : Heritage Walk in Humayun Tomb

The night tours in Delhi are a unique way to experience the city of Delhi. There are several monuments that are open for viewing at night. Enroute Indian History has been conducting Raat ke Afsane, literally stories told at night, after sunset, since 2019. These walks are conducted at various monuments in the city of Delhi. The guided walk imparts knowledge about monuments, Delhi’s history, heritage art and architecture.

Heritage Walk in Humayun Tomb

One of our recently launched night walks takes place at the Humayun Tomb complex.

The walk takes visitors and history buffs to the Humayun Tomb Complex and then to the area surrounding the Humayun Tomb where we explore lesser-known sites such as Dum Dama Sahib, Sabz Burj, Nizamuddin Chillgah, and Patte Shah ka Dargah.

Humayun Tomb is a 90-acre garden complex built by Hajji Begum, the first wife of Emperor Humayun of the Mughal dynasty.

Throughout the area, there are several garden tomb complexes such as Bu Halima, Isa Khan’s Tomb, Afsarwala Tomb, Arab ki Serai.

The history buffs are guided to the various sites and are given detailed information about the history of the historical buildings that weave together the history of Delhi.

During the walk to Raat Ke Afsane:

Humayun Tomb, participants were thrilled to see the dome of the tomb illuminated. The double dome is twice as high as the main building. The Mughal Dormitory, as the Humayun Tomb is called, contains the tombs of Emperor Humayun, Hajji Begum, Hamida Banu Begum and about 60 other Mughal tombs. Dara Shukoh is also believed to be buried in the dormitory. However, his body remains unidentified.

Many participants were amazed to see the monument glowing against the dark sky on a full moon night. The monument strangely looks like a 2-D cardboard at night, and it seems unfathomable that it is actually a real monument.

If you enjoy sightseeing in Delhi and exploring its historical heritage, but are hesitant to go it alone, these guided walking tours are an easy, affordable, and safe option that will help you every step of the way to enjoy these historical sites in a large, comfortable group of like-minded people.

Conclusion:

The Humayun Tomb and the numerous buildings within the vast complex, surrounded by a 30-acre garden, make it one of the most remarkable monuments in Delhi with its size and grandeur. It was built under the patronage of Humayun’s wife Hamida Banu Begum and the great Mughal Emperor Akbar in memory of his father, Emperor Humayun. The tomb is often considered a precursor to the Taj Mahal with its architecture, Char Bagh gardens, gigantic dome and richly decorated stylistic elements. It is also referred to as the “dormitory of the Mughals” as many descendants of the Mughals chose to be buried here in the crypt.

The complex also includes other buildings such as the Isa Khan Tomb, the Arab Sarai, the Barber’s Tomb, the Mosque and the Tomb of Afsarwala that are spectacular and a must visit.

Who should take this walk- If you appreciate art & architecture, nature, history, or photography.

RAAT-KE-AFSANE /Heritage Walks After Sunset

Enroute Indian History is the first heritage company that is conducting one of a kind heritage walk inside the monuments after sunset. The monuments assume a new lease of life when they are gloriously lit, radiating brighter than the moon in the darkness of sky.

Take a walk with us in the starry night of Delhi, as the monuments burn bright against the dark sky and allows you to have one of the most memorable experiences in Delhi without leaving the city.

LADIES NIGHT WALK /For Women By Women

The segment of ‘Ladies Night Walk: for Women by Women’ arose from the need of many women to explore the night in their city safely. We received numerous calls where women were hesitant to join a night walk primarily because they felt unsafe to move around in dimly lit spaces. There were several basic queries that many women participants raised: “How far was the parking area from the site of the walk?”, “Was the heritage complex properly guarded?” “Who would be conducting the walk?”. These questions alarmed our company to design a separate segment that met these very needs of the women.
