A treasure hunt with a logo Who would like you to come along?
A treasure hunt with a logo Who would like you to come along?I’d like to invite all my design friends to take me for the adventure to discover the original logo designs that were long lost.
A passion for vintage identity design
I’ve been a big fan of great graphic designers like Paul Rand and Saul Bass for quite some time. Their work is simple; clean and powerful… designs that was create at a time when commercial design was still in its peak.
Nowadays; things are different. We have more tools as well as better training. And to a certain extent; anyone can become an artist… There are many logo design galleries; which showcase large collections of work from designers all over the globe…
If you compare the art of today and in the past; while the art of today is of more depth than it did 20 years ago; they are lacking some thing… to me I find these galleries to be not stimulating. Sure; there’s an impressive collection however; it’s not a majority and you must look…
Check out the home page of Logo Pond below… These to me are tiny illustrations that are stunning; however they’re not classic logo designs which is the goal of a designer.
I’m more enthuse by identity design that’s extremely simple
; the type of work in design that has stood through the years and can be seen in the branding of major corporations everywhere we look. It’s a far better option than the sometimes intricate illustrative style that is seen in design galleries online. The tiny illustrations are wonderful however to me; they’re not true identity design ; rather; it’s more of a disposable art. I think it’s the basic timeless art that will be the most successful.
treasure hunt with a logo
In this regard it is why I keep an eye out for logo design inspiration from other sources. For instance; I’ve recently purchase a second-hand edition of ” World of Logotypes” volume 1 that I’m eagerly getting. It’s pack with logo designs that date back to the 70s.
I was fortunate to acquire my copy for just PS14 however; other copies are price in thousands… Thank goodness that someone has taken it in and upload it to the internet for anyone to download for free. Below are a few pages to whet your appetite and hopefully; inspire you to read more.
This week; I was watching a clip with one of my favorite ‘celebrities designer of logos; Aaron Draplin. If you’re not familiar with his name; you can search YouTube and watch his design chats that are fill with passion as well as humour; along with occasionally a swear word.
The video shows he’s out “junking” to find design ideas at junk shops. Take a look to see for yourself.
In this film; Draplin makes the statement that he’s searching for work that was “eaten by the wheels of design advancement“. Looking for work done of graphic designers who were held back by the methods and tools that they have access to.
While watching I thought… WOW I’d love to do the same thing! I’m looking forward to seeing what I can uncover… What could I do if I discover a single item? What if the other guys did it as well? What cool things could we find? What if somebody put all of it in one location? I’d definitely like to observe the result of…
That’s why… Ich’m definitely going to try it.
