Maruti Suzuki Ertiga: Revisiting the second-gen of the popular MPV
In late 2018 – the previous decade, right? – Maruti Suzuki introduced the second generation of its popular people mover, the Ertiga. The first generation of the Ertiga was well-conceived in the Indian market as it truly fulfilled the purpose of ferrying around passengers in a well-rounded and affordable package.
The second generation of the Ertiga ups the ante to a whole new level. Without messing much with the whole formula, Maruti Suzuki has improved on all fronts with the Ertiga. So, a car that pretty much costs as much as a compact SUV can now ferry around seven passengers with better comfort and comes with all the modern bells and whistles. And also, of course, with Maruti Suzuki’s bulletproof reliability and hassle-free maintenance.
So, here’s a lowdown on what makes the Ertiga the most popular people mover in the country. Read on.
Specifications
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga boasts an all-new design. And, thankfully, it looks far prettier and well-proportioned than the model it replaces. The front is now butcher, thanks to the in-your-face chrome studded grille which flanks the new projector headlamps. The front bumper is a lot more muscular than before, while still being easy on the eyes. The side profile is well-proportioned too, with only the 15-inch wheels acting as an eyesore. The rear-end design is also neat and contemporary. By and large, the Ertiga looks good from almost every angle.
As far as numbers are concerned, the second-gen Ertiga is 4,395mm in length, 1,735mm in width, and 1,690mm in height. The wheelbase is a staggering 2,740mm. The base-spec model tips the scale at 1,135kg.
Under the hood, the Ertiga is powered by two engines. The first is the brand’s in-house developed 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol good for 103bhp and 138Nm of torque. It comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a four-speed torque converter gearbox. It is BS-VI compliant too. Then there is the 1.5-liter diesel engine, which is BS-IV compliant and expected to be axed out before the April 2020 deadline.
Mileage
The Ertiga also comes with a petrol-CNG option. As expected, this is the most fuel-efficient version of the Ertiga, at an ARAI-claimed, 26.2km/kg. As for the petrol counterpart, the manual is good for 19.34km/l, while the petrol-automatic is not much behind at 18.69km/l.
Features
The Ertiga sure seems appealing in terms of the overall equipment for an MPV that is priced rather attractively. The top-spec variant of the Ertiga you see here comes with projector headlamps, 15-inch alloy wheels, and passive entry sensors on the front two doors. There are no LEDs, though. On the interior front, the main highlight is the company’s Smartplay infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Then there is a push-button start, a color TFT MID display, SHVS technology, electronically retractable and adjustable wing mirrors, steering-mounted audio controls, and a leather-wrapped gear knob and steering wheel.
Colors
The Ertiga, as of early 2020, comes in five shades, namely, Metallic Magma Grey, Pearl Metallic Oxford Blue, Pearl Arctic White, Metallic Silky Silver, and Pearl Metallic Auburn Red. In our opinion, the Ertiga looks the best in the Pearl Metallic Oxford Blue shade.
